What To Expect During Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Kevin McCormack

As you begin the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By taking the treatments to you, we can demonstate how different window treatments would look with your decor. Now you can make an informed selection by seeing how each window treatment looks in your own room.

But what exactly happens during an in-home consultation? And how does showing you different products at your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Even though every in-home consultation is personalized, there are a few constants that you should experience.

Detailing A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Start by making an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to show you some options related to your preferred treatment. We will also bring alternatives, so you can feel confident that your choice matches your ideal.

When we arrive, we’ll sit down and talk about what you want in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency needs, and we’ll discuss hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your representative will also ask about how the room is used and what style you are trying to accomplish. The end goal is to imagine what your decor will ultimately look like with the coverings installed.

We might show you many different samples to see which ones fit into your interior design and work with your windows. Most people want to explore a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the perfect stain to match the room. We’ll also find all the options available for the shutter, shade, or blind, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once a decision is made, we’ll get percise measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows in each room—even if you only want to fit treatments for some of your windows. We do this because many of our customers want to order additional shutters or blinds without another consultation. At the end of the appointment, we will walk you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no phantom numbers on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are confident that Sunburst will perform professional in-home consultation, there are some actions you should never experience from any window treatment company. As they say, the quality of the consultation usually equals the quality of the product.

First, your consultant should respect your home. He or she should show up as scheduled, clean and presentable, and offer to cover their shoes with shoe booties. Your consultant should always bring product and company literature and pricing details.

When it comes to price, you should be given a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, scrawled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And always reject pricing estimates before they take any window measurements. You should always know how much the final bill will cost you. Be sure to to search for references and online reviews.
